Welcome to Exploring FACS! Salem Middle offers 2 semester long FACS classes; Consumer Focus and Family Focus. Below is a brief description of each class and the modules that will be covered.
Also, FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) will start up soon! This is a student led organization that expands on the FACS curriculum and objectives and works to create strong student learners through service projects and personal/competitive projects.
Family Focus
Module 1: Interpersonal Relationships
understanding different characteristics of yourself and others, understanding the family unit and understanding how to form and communicate within relationships of all types
Module 3: Nutrition and Wellness
understanding the 6 essential nutrients, MyPlate, the USDA food guidelines, food labels, kitchen safety and sanitation, basic kitchen tools and equipment, recipes, and how to follow and create recipes by working with a lab group
Module 5: Child Development
learn about children at all stages and ages through the American Red Cross Babysitter's certification program and RealCare Parenting program
Module 7: Interior Design
basic principles such as balance, emphasis and proportion, floor plans, room models, the function of furniture and living spaces, energy conservation within the home
Consumer Focus
Module 2: Personal Finance
learn the difference between needs and wants, how to set goals now and in the future, how to best manage your money and plan for the future, how advertising affects your buying and how to make a good, sound decision
Module 4: Food Service and Hospitality
learn about foodborne illnesses and how to set a table and following proper table etiquette
Module 6: Apparel
understand the factors that influence your clothing choices, elements of design, basic construction by hand and on a sewing machine, learn how to follow a sewing pattern, create sewing projects
